Bustling with eateries and bars, I looked around trying to work out exactly where Colony Room Green might be. For a start, the name seemed somewhat different so I really wasn’t sure what I was looking for. While standing there looking at door numbers and restaurant names, I heard a familiar voice. A voice that can only be one person, so I knew I was in the right place. Rusty Egan was sitting outside enjoying the Summer weather with his son Oscar. “It’s down those stairs” Rusty said as he and Oscar pointed to the entrance.

“Known affectionately as one of the ‘seediest spots in Britain’ but also the Bohemian heart of Soho, The Colony Room Club was an infamous drinking den/small members club which ran from 1948 to 2008. It attracted celebrity artists and eccentrics of its day, including founder member Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud.”
I found myself in a coridor, Mr Smith called out, “Gem, you’re walking into the toilets!” Whoops ! It’s not particularly unusual for me to get a bit lost. I was grateful for the guidance, backtracked and there, in this mad little coridor that felt very symbolic of something very ‘Alice’, was a green door. On it there was a sign saying “Colony Room Green“. This was the perfect portal to eccentricity. No longer were we on the outside, but a room, just one room, bursting with stories, cocktails and character. It reminded me of that old movie called “The Secret Garden”. The one where the movie begins in black and white, but when she enters the secret garden, the movie changes into colour. Just add a stack of well oiled punk rock glamour and grit to the vibe and you’ll find your way. From the ceiling to the floor and everything inbetween, I loved this place.

Nothing had been neglected or given permission to be boring. Having not known Jordan personally myself, though I often saw her at gigs and events, I got the feeling that this exhibition was exactly how she would have wanted it to be. In the corner there was a lovely sash window. On closer inspection, and realising that we were infact one level below ground, this window was completely fake and had been backlit as though it were allowing the streetlights to flicker through. A little sign hanging on the window read “Fake As Fuck”. I laughed. Great space indeed. If you get to go, Colony Room Green, London, W1B 4BS

There is a saying, “Good friends are like stars, you don’t aways see them, but you know they are there.” Andrew James’ devoted love for his grately missed friend Jordan, has really shone out here. Her loss from this life as we know it has been tough for him and her much loved friends and family. To honour Jordan’s life in this way means so much.

Some words from the curators Andrew James and Darren Coffield:
“As we celebrate Jordan’s 70th birthday and mourn her passing, we revisit her iconoclastic life from childhood to international stardom with Jordan Uncovered: A Personal Photo Album of Previously Unseen Photographs, a unique and intimate exhibition at Colony Room Green. Muse, model, manager, mentor and so much more… during the 1970s Jordan became a worldwide icon: ‘It’s like being in an art movement – someone has to start it.’ The legendary artist and filmmaker, Derek Jarman described her as the “first Sex Pistol”, which highlights her prominent role and influence in the punk movement. As punk’s most-fetishised poster girl, Jordan’s pivotal role in Vivienne Westwood’s and Malcolm McLaren’s riotous world was vital to the image of bands such as The Sex Pistols. Jordan has been immortalised as a bleach-blonde-beehived, Cleopatra-eyed, diva of defiance, but there was far more to her influence than straightforward anarchic provocation. Rebellion was actually a by product: (“I often described myself as a living work of art”), a need for personal expression and a militant desire to champion the underdog were at the crux of her unique perspective.”

‘People often refer to the name and the things that I wore as demonstrating bravery and shaking things up, but while I showed off to the best of my ability it wasn’t about bravery because I didn’t care what people thought.’ Jordan
Closing on 21st August, you still have time to go. “Jordan Uncovered” has been curated by Andrew James and Darren Coffield. This awesome little venue is a recreation of Soho’s notorious Colony Room. This club was attended by icons such as David Bowie, Adam Ant, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Shane McGowan, Kate Moss, Lisa Stansfield and Joe Strummer and many others. Colony Room Green can be found in the basement of Ziggy Green, the much-loved David Bowie-inspired restaurant from the Daisy Green Collection.
